The user interface from the Freedom 9 changed quite dramatically.

I noticed that there was a user interface for assigning MAC IP binding on the Freedom 9, but this tab does not exists for me on the Fortigate Firmware update, however the MAC IP binding values I had established in the Freedom 9 router were still seeming to be valid when DHCP was assigning addresses.

Using the CLI interface on the Fortigate Firmware main status page for my Freedom 9 router, I was able to use commands to show the values of the table and assign new MAC IP bindings.

Very surprised there isn't a better user interface for this built into the firmware. Maybe newer versions does have a GUI for this.

In the meantime, this worked for me: http://kb.fortinet.com/kb/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=13076&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KCARTICLE_1_1&dialogID=13907154&stateId=0%200%2013905530

You can configure the FortiGate unit to assign specific IP addresses to a computer, based on its MAC address.
Use the CLI command
config system dhcp reserved-address
to reserve an IP address for a particular client identified by its device MAC address and type of connection. The DHCP server then always assigns the reserved IP address to the client. The number of reserved addresses that you can define ranges from 10 to 200 depending on the FortiGate model.

Use the following commands :

config system dhcp reserved-address
edit <name_str></name_str> {name_str}
<name_str>    set ip </name_str><address_ipv4></address_ipv4>{address_ipv4}
<name_str><address_ipv4>    set mac </address_ipv4></name_str><address_hex></address_hex>{address_hex}
<name_str><address_ipv4><address_hex>    set type {regular | ipsec}
end</address_hex></address_ipv4></name_str>

!! I can't delete messages or manage the folders in hotmail but at least I can read them.

What I didn't realize is that by default Mac Mail deletes all the messages in your Hotmail mailbox after 1 week after downloading them on your Mac Mail. (Useful about 10 years ago apple. Now with the large mailboxes available this is not a useful feature) Needless to say I was pissed when 4 years of email disappeared from my hotmail inbox and is now only available in my Mac Mail OS X environment. Useless.

So it's painful, but I restored it to my hotmail inbox without forwarding it all on and thus losing the original senders / dates etc. Here's what I did:

(note: you will also need Eudora 6.2+ free edition installed on the PC):

Starting in Mac Mail do the following for each mailbox you wish to transfer (In, Sent, Deleted, etc.):

Select all messages and choose File -> Save As from the main menu. Choose "Raw Message Source" as the format and a name for the group of messages and click the "Save" button. Even though there are no obvious "export" commands from Mac Mail, this will effectively create a file in standard mbox format. However, Outlook Express will not directly import this file type so we'll have to play with it a bit.

Transfer the file you just created to the PC.

Open the directory C:\Documents and Settings\[Account Name]\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora (you will need to go to the View tab under the Tools -> Folder Options menu and select "Show Hidden Files and Folders" to be able to view this folder).

If appropriate, rename the file you created in step 1 to match one of the mailboxes in this folder (In, Out, Junk, Trash, etc). Assign this file a .mbx extension.

Copy the file from the previous step into the folder you opened in step 3. (Important! Only do this if you don't mind overwriting the email in your Eudora application).

Open Eudora and view the mailbox you just copied. This will firmly establish your .mbx file as a Eurdora mailbox. Don't worry if the text in your messages doesn't look quite right - this will soon be remedied.

Open Outlook Express. Select File -> Import -> Messages from the main menu. Choose "Eudora Pro or Light" and go through the rest of the wizard. This should properly import all your messages from the selected mailbox into Outlook Express.

Now to transfer to Outlook 2003, simply export the messaged from Outlook Express to Outlook using the File - Export - Messages and export to Outlook in Outlook Express.

This will then copy all the messages to your Outlook 2003's Main Local Folder. The next part is beautiful; you can then select all the messages and drag and drop them to your Outlook's Hotmail Inbox and it will transfer all your messages again online. (Very nice functionality Microsoft)

And there you have your messages available online in your hotmail inbox once again for free, just a pain in the butt. I had the 2wire set up to have the Linksys WRT610N in a DMZplus which worked most of the time, but I would randomly lose the internet connection because both the 2wire and the WRT were both doing NAT.

Telus doesn't use PPPoE, it dynamically assigns IP addresses so you need to do this:

Go into your 2wire MDC setup http://192.168.1.254/mdc using the password 1nd1go
Go to Broadband Link - Configure, Click on Disable PVC Search.
Go to Advanced - Configure Services and uncheck Enable Routing

Login to the modem again and http://192.168.1.254/mdc
Go to Local Network - Configure and ENABLE DHCP. Telus needs this to connect your router to the internet.
Go from the 2wire ethernet port into your router's internet or WAN port, release and renew the address.

Works well, without having to trade the 2wire for the Thompson Speedtouch.

Telus 2Wire MDC Consol Password is: 1nd1go

This was incredibly difficult to find online so I want to post it to add another source on the net for it.

If you have a router you want to use for home use with Telus and have a Telus 2Wire modem, and want to use it as a simple dumb modem to pass the internet connection to your router, you need to access the MDC consol.

To do this enter your modem's ip address (Default 192.168.1.254) followed by /mdc
ie. http://192.168.2.254/mdc

The password is 1nd1go

You can get the modem to operate using the DMZplus feature from the regular consol; plug a cable from your 2wire ethernet port to your router ethernet port, login to the 2wire config and then set up the DMZ to go to the device you see listed on your home network (this would be the router you just plugged in)

Then plug the cable into your internet port on your router. Make sure DHCP is turned on on the 2wire modem.

I did this with my Linksys WRT160N router and it works, but the internet would randomly drop and reconnect. I noticed it when streaming audio over the net.

You need to access the MDC console and set the modem in pure bridge mode.

Or you can call Telus and exchange it for a Thompson Speedtouch (dumb) modem which is probably the easiest solution.

Also note, Telus blocks common ports such as the FTP port 21, and many tec support don't know this, so save yourself frustration when you can't connect to your FTP server by changing the port to something like 1030 instead of 21.

Setting up home FTP server with Telus

This was an incredibly difficult thing to accomplish, and it shouldn't be. I spent 3 long days plugging away at this and finally figured out thanks to a blogger out there, that Telus blocks well known ports and this causes all kinds of problems.

I would place my FTP server in my router / modem's DMZ, and I still couldn't access it from the Internet, only from the home network, which told me that the request was being blocked outside of my home network on Telus' end.

In their defense, I am sure Telus doesn't tell their technical support people that common ports are blocked. The 3 tech support guys I talked to had no clue and when I asked outright if Telus had a firewall or blocked ports, each tech person said no, which is not the case.

Anyhow, if you are trying to set up a FTP server on your home network for access to the Internet, here is what I did exactly.

I have 2 Telus DSL modems, one is the Seimen's Gigaset SE567 shown here:

This wireless modem runs Telus' own firmware which is heavily restricted in what you can do with the unit. You can't even upgrade the firmware on it. This modem allows for port forwarding but I was unable to get this to work at all. There is a DMZ function and I was unable to get a response from my FTP server even with it in the DMZ.

What I wanted was a pure DSL modem that does not act as a firewall. I hooked up my other DSL modem, the 2Wire modem shown here:

Setting up the 2 wire to act like a plain dumb DSL modem was tricky.

Reset the DSL modem to factory defaults by pressing the reset button for 10 seconds while the unit was on.

Connect to the modem via ethernet port with my computer set to a static IP of 192.168.1.10. Connect to the modem by typing 192.168.1.254 into a browser. Password by default is telus

Set up the modem to have a static IP address *Important - Make sure DHCP is installed for your home network. If you don't do this it will not assign the internet IP address to your home router. It dosen't makes sense to me to have 2 DHCP servers on your network but you need it set up this way.

Save the settings, then plug in your home router. I have a Linksys WRT160N. I plugged network cable into one of the ports of the 2 wire and then plugged the other end into the internet port on the WRT160N.

The 2Wire should show this device on your connected devices and assign a IP address to it. Then go to your Firewall advanced settings, select the router you just plugged in (should appear as an unknown IP address) and then assign that device to be in the DMZ. This means all requests form the internet will be forwarded on to this device (My home router WRT160N) without any firewall. Now my home router will be my front line to the Internet.

Save settings, restart the 2 wire DSL modem and then restart the WRT160N. It should get a valid internet IP address.

To set up the FTP, my WRT160N has an FTP server built in, so I enabled it, but Telus blocks port 21, so I changed the FTP port to 1030.

Tested it remotely and it works. ftp://###.###.###.###:1030 can connect using a web browser of FTP client.

So basically Telus blocks port 21. To use an FTP server from home, switch the port to an uncommon port and you should be good to go.

I heard you can trade in your Telus wireless router for a Thomson SpeedTouch 516v6 high speed modem with power adapter, used for their light speed clients, but it is capable of high speed, just not wireless. It acts as a straight DSL modem, so you can then use your own Router / Modem such as in my case with the Linksys one I have.

You generally don't want 2 routers hooked up to each other. Firewalls and port blocking and NAT gets messy if you do that. Best to have a straight modem going into your router.

D-Link DNS-323 cannot install bit torrent program

Updated my D-Link DNS-323 to Firmware version 1.07 and using the Easy Setup Utility from D-Link, latest version 4.4.0.0 I would click on the "Bit torrent" button

The application would say it is installing on my NAS and reboot the DNS-323, but when I go to the admin interface of the 323 under the downloads button it would tell me that the bit torrent software was not installed. Nothing I could do would get this to work.

D-Link tech got back to me and got me to install the beta of the firmware 1.08 and install the bit torrent add on. It worked like a charm.

What you can do is upgrade the firmware to being 1.08 beta. Which can be found on the following link :

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns323/Beta/Firmware/dns323_fw_108b08_beta.zip

and then download the bittorrent package file from the following link

ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Multimedia/dns323/Beta/Apps/dns323_bittorrent_package_100_08272009.zip

- Extract both files to your desktop
- First upgrade the firmware on the DNS-323
- Then log into the DNS-323 and click on Advanced tab
- Then click on Add-ons
- Under application pack click on browse and select the bittorrent package that you have extracted
- Click on apply
- Once logged back into the unit
- Under the advanced tab and add-ons you will see add-on summary (you should see the one that says Bittorrent)
- Then click on start under the start/stop

Cannot browse Workgroup: cannot access certain computers via name, but can with IP address

LAN set up in single workgroup, approx 50 computers, DHCP router assigning addresses on 192.168.1.XXX

Resolving computer IP addresses from computer names no problem, browsing workgroup no problem, then suddenly what appears to be random, some computers are unable to view and access the workgroup. Those that can browse the workgroup cannnot access certain computers but can access others.

All computers on workgroup however can ping one another using IP addresses.

The issue: I introduced a WINS server, our fileserver, a ReadyNAS. I configured it to act as a WINS server, and configured the DHCP router to push the address of this server as a WINS server. Suddenly these issues arise; cannot access the workgroup, cannot browse the workgroup, cannot connect to some computers on the workgroup. Removing the WINS server corrected the problem.

I don't want to delve into why this was causing an issue. There was only 1 WINS server in the workgroup so no conflicts between multiple WINS servers.

Just thought I would share this information for people that are having seemingly random issues accessing their workgroups and resolving computer names to IP addresses.

Access won't launch if another user has the same database file open already

Unusual behavior; in a multiuser environment computers connected via workgroup to a central file server, when one user had the MS Access database open on the fileserver and a second user tried to open the database using a desktop shortcut, MS Access wouldn't launch or do anything on the 2nd user's machine. The hourglass would appear for a second and then disappear. Nothing would happen.

If the first user closed the database and the second user attempted to launch again from the desktop shortcut, it would work fine.

All users had a common mapped drive to the file server.

Second user could open Access first and then from Access open the database file using the mapped drive, but shortcut or clicking the .MDB file would not launch Access.

SOLUTION:
If you use a shortcut that starts in the Office folder you shouyld be able to get around this pain. Place a shortcut in the same folder of the db. Set the target line to (edit path as necessary to the msaccess.exe file):
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\msaccess.exe" "\\MyServer\MyFolder\Mydatabase.mdb"

Of course the correct architecture for a multiuser environment is to have a back end database and build a front end interface for all users, but this isn't always practical, especially if the database is not used often or used by new users on a regular basis.

Drive Mapping using .BAT File - Access Database Security Issues

This was a tough one that I could not find much information on the net about.

Basically I was using a .bat file on a remote computer to drive map network computers when the startup. The mapping worked well but for some strange reason when the users tried to open an Access Database form one of the mapped drives an error message saying:

Microsoft Access cannot open this file.
This file is located outside your intranet or on an untrusted site. Microsoft Access will not open the file due to potential security problems.
To open the file, copy it to your computer or an accessible network location.

The issue was resolved if I actually mapped the drive from the client's machine but if my .bat script did the mapping it would give me the error.

The problem was I was using the remote machine's IP addresses and not the server name. Using the server name instead of the IP address fixed the problem.

My bat code looked like this:
if exist s: net use s: /delete
net use s: "\\192.168.1.55\FileServer\Shared" password /USER:\Guest

I changed it to this and now it works:
if exist s: net use s: /delete
net use s: "\\Company_file_svr\FileServer\Shared" password /USER:\Guest

**Update - This randomly stopped working and again the client machines rejected the access database I was trying to open because if trust issues. To resolve it I had to go into Internet Explorer on each client machine, go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Trusted Sites, click the Sites button and add both the DNS server name as well as the IP address of the server the files reside on. Make sure the "Require Server Verification" is unchecked.
-MS Security settings are way to restrictive.

MS Access: Using a variable from a text box on a form in a SQL statement

There is an interesting error that happens when you try to use a variable from a form in a SQL statement in VB; the variable from the form's value is surrounded in double quotes. This basically ends the SQL statement prematurely as soon as the variable is used.

For example, the basic statement:

"SELECT tbl_Inventory.* FROM tbl_Inventory WHERE (((Vendor)= [Forms]![Inventory]![frm_Vendor]);"

This statement uses the form variable from the text box frm_Vendor to filter the results from tbl_Inventory. As this runs however, the value for [Forms]![Inventory]![frm_Vendor] will be surrounded with double quotes. The SQL statement thinks that the statement ends where the first double quote appears.

To get around this you need to surround the variable in single quotes. The easiest way to do this is to fool the code so to speak to use the quotes from the form to include a ' character.

The way to do this is to use quotes with the & character.

So to make the statement work, your code will look like this:
"SELECT tbl_Inventory.* FROM tbl_Inventory WHERE (((Vendor)= '" &[Forms]![Inventory]![frm_Vendor]&"');"

Use default gateway on remote network - Doesn't seem to work while using a VPN

This one puzzled me for quite some time.

I connect to a number of clients via PPTP VPN. I never want to use the remote connection's gateway to serve internet, just to access computers.

When I set up the VPN in Windows XP, I would go to the VPN's properties - Networking - Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) - peroperties - advanced

then I would make sure "Use default gateway on remote network" was unchecked.

Only one some of my VPN connections would it actually use my local gateway, and on some connections it wouldn't, it would insist on using the remote gateway.

Reason for this: My local IP address of my computer.

I was running on 192.168.1.xxx in my home network. The VPN network was also set up on a 192.168.1.XXX so my VPN address would be in the same address pool, so when the network was trying to flip me over to the local network, I was still in the same network pool as the VPN, thus it didn't know where to send the packets.

Good rule of thumb, have your home network on a distinct network address pool such as 192.168.2.XXX just to be safe and avoid conflicts between the VPN and your network.

Refresh record causes Microsoft Access has experienced a problem and needs to close

I was running an access database that would seemingly crash everytime an item was added from another form and the current form calls a refresh record to display the changes.

Access was crashing because on the main form in which the refresh was being called, there was a subform, and in this subform the "Filter" condition of the form properties (the subform properties and then the data tab, 2nd item down is Filter)

I removed this condition (which was filtering out null entries) and the form stopped crashing when refresh was called.

Importing MP2 MPEG file into Adobe Premier: Video, no audio

I just bought a Sony Handycam DCR-SR45 because it is one of the few cameras that saves directly as an .MPG MP2 file. I don't like having to convert the video file before I can work with it in an editor.

Copying the file directly off the camera, I can import it into Adobe Premier Pro CS3, but it will only import the video, no audio.

In the native compressed format, the audio is in AC3 format. Adobe Premier does not decode this be default. You need to copy the file "ad2ac3dec.dll" to the Premier Pro root directory, in my case "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro CS3"

The file exists in Adobe Elements and you can copy it from the Elements folder, but if you don't have Elements, it can be a pain to track down a copy of the file. I managed to track it down and will post it to my Skydrive to hopefully help people that are having this same problem.

You can download the file from

http://cid-ba2a42f3f9ea714d.skydrive.live.com/browse.aspx/Public

Outputto Text File Microsoft Access Contains Random Line Breaks Solution 2

The solution listed below still didn't work. Data from Access that needs to be output to incorporate into another system. The easiest way to do this is usually have the data be generated by a report and then output the report as a text file.

Problem is there are random line breaks that appear in the text file. Most systems don't like random blank lines in the text file when importing.

One option would be to create a simple program that cleans the text file and removes the blank lines, and outputs a new cleaned text file.

The other option is to try to fix it form the source, the report itself. To do this you need to make sure the text box heights are 0.3cm high, font size Ariel 6 (you have to type 6 in, it dosen't appear in the pulldown) I then set up the page layout as landscape and set the margins all to 0. This works. For inches, reference the MS Knowledge Base.

Reference from MS Knowledge Base:

SYMPTOMS

When you use an OutputTo action or method to save a report to an MS-DOS Text (.txt) format, the text file adds blank lines randomly to the data.

NOTE: This behavior can also occur when you use the Save As/Export command to save a report to a text file; in this case, the Save Formatted check box in the Save Report In dialog is automatically selected.

CAUSE
A text file does not have the same vertical spacing options as a report in Microsoft Access. When you output a report to a text file, the text file will contain 8 lines per inch. If the Height of the report's detail section is set for a different number of lines per inch, for example 6 lines per inch (.1667), then blank lines are added automatically.

RESOLUTION
You can avoid random blank lines when outputting a report to a text file by setting the Height property of a report's detail section to a value divisible by .125 inches. For example, if the detail section's Height property contains a fractional number, set the fractional portion of this property value to one of the following decimal equivalents: 0.125, .5 etc

When the height of the detail section is divisible by .125 inches, the spacing is consistent (without extra, random blank lines) because the data from the report is output at 8 lines per inch.
